A small Teeny TINY screwdriver is required first to access the battery compartment. I dropped the screw because I have no intention of ever re-experiencing that fight; I keep this device next to the cage but not within reach. (The -1/2 stars are due to the ridiculously small size of the screw, which has to be removed to use it). Second, there's no volume, so you have to record from a short distance lest your bird completely explode once the loop recording starts. I kept playing and re-recording until I reached an acceptable volume; oh and this device is by no means a high tech recording device, it's a very basic 10 second recording. (- 1/2 stars for no volume control). My third parrot seems to be enjoying the recordings, he's listening so intently that I sincerely think it helps him feel connected when we're away. 4. Learning curve but would buy again. Unfortunately, there aren't many shooting options to choose from, so this gets the job done in very simple terms.
