Review on TEKTON 5866: High-Performance 12 Inch Oil Filter Pliers for Easy Maintenance by Demarco Vonk

Revainrating 5 out of 5

They definitely work when others don't

Bought an old BMW from the 70's and decided to change the oil as a first step. I'm not sure what the previous owner did to install the oil filter, but damn did it ever get stuck. The filter was completely plain with no oil filter slot and there was no gap on either side to allow for the use of a strap wrench so it was pretty much my only option. Let me tell you it's a beast. After using the lowest setting it kept slipping and I got frustrated. I was afraid of bending the filter, thinking it would be harder to remove if it warped. No, that's exactly what you have to do. I switched to the medium setting, really cranked the knob up and indeed I felt the pliers bite and the filter unscrew easily. HAND TIGHTEN with a little oil on the new gasket. You don't need this tool to remove it, but I'm certainly glad it exists for people who don't know it. And for goodness sake, never use this to tighten a new filter! You'll never get it back.

Pros
  • One year trial period
Cons
  • Not the best
