The tips of the nibs are so rigid and stiff that nearly each upstroke causes the nib to skid across the paper and splatter ink. We have been using Winsor & Newton ink (not inexpensive), and also have watched multiple beginner videos and continually modified our grip, pressure, and position in an attempt to fix the skipping, but the instructors we've watched have said that higher-quality nibs are slightly curved under at the tip, preventing the skidding and skipping on the upstroke. My advice is to spend a little more money and get better nibs.
