Review on Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice 2 205/50 R17 93T winter by Mateusz Drabarczyk ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Feel free to buy, for such a price, the quality is simply amazing.

Tires Made in Germany. Acquired in 2022, drove them for 45,000 km, 5.5 seasons. Dimension 215/55 R17. The protector is still retained with a full pattern (4-5 mm). I add my opinion only in comparison with Nokian and Goodyear studded tires, as well as Dunlop, Yokohama, Hankook summer tires that I used. In practice, I did not compare it with other non-studded winter tires, since I immediately chose Goodyear, having studied the tests of auto publications and the types of coatings that I most often have to drive on in winter. In the Hong Kong region, as a rule, winters are not severe (more often -5 . +5, less often up to -10), there is no permanent dense snow and ice on the roads, most of the winter is dry, wet or slightly snowy asphalt. It is in such conditions that this tire is the undisputed leader of all available tests. In my opinion, it is true: in comparison with other tires that I have driven, on surfaces without deep snow and ice, the car handles almost as well as on summer tires. And, on the contrary, in the conditions of severe northern winters, constant snow or ice cover on the roads, studded tires (the same Nokian) become leaders in terms of driving efficiency. Although the winter of 2022-2022 shows that even in snowy frosty conditions, the Ultragrip Ice2 copes with both snow and ice. As new winter tires, I now most likely consider them.

Pros
  • 1. Manageability Predictable behavior on almost all types of road surface. - Dry and wet asphalt - grip like summer tires - Freshly fallen, not cleared, shallow snow - predictably holds the trajectory with careful maneuvering, confident braking with virtually no ABS. - Ice in light frost (about -5) - fairly effective braking (braking distance exceeds expected, stopping earlier than planned) - Ice in severe frost (from -15 and further above) - braking efficiency drops, slip is expected. 2. Noise - According to my subjective feelings, the noise is similar to the noise of summer tires. When driving, you do not pay attention that you are already driving on winter tires.
Cons
  • 1. Tire sidewalls are quite soft. With a slight wiggle of the steering wheel at speed, there is a slight delay in the trajectory of movement. It is not critical, you quickly get used to it and no longer pay attention. But they are worth protecting. In the second year of operation, on one of the frosty days, when carefully driving onto the curb, a sidewall cut formed - I had to change the wheel in frost -30. Fortunately, this was the only case in all 5 seasons of operation. I believe that the softness of the sidewalls is a design feature that allows you to achieve all the described advantages of this tire. This must be taken into account during operation. 2. Now, in the 6th year of the purchase, a hernia has formed on one of the tires.
