Review on 4PC Professional Wood Chisel Tool Set - Sturdy Chrome Vanadium Steel, Canvas Bag Included by Danny Kimble

Understand the value, and just buy them. As your mains, or as backups, its a no brainer.

Chisels are a funny thing in woodworking. Master woodworkers in their 70's might still use a no-name set, with no idea where they come from, that they'll continue to use for the rest of their lives. That's because as long as chisels have good steel, hold an edge, and have a flat back, it doesn't matter what the brand is.That's why you need to understand what you're getting when you buy a $12-17 set of chisels. You are not paying for a meticulously crafted hand tool with a finely honed edge and back quality controlled to be as flat as flat can be. If you want that, go pay for it. But, if you're willing to put a little work in, these will work as well as any set of expensive chisels you could buy. I've used these chisels alone to make gapless dovetails countless times since I purchased them in everything from cherry, to oak.First, you'll absolutely need to sharpen them. That's non negotiable. Rating these without sharpening them is unfair. $300 Lie Nielsen planes have to be sharpened out of the box. You'll probably want to grind in a new bevel. The factory bevel is somewhere closer to 30 degrees. With a little elbow grease you can get it done with sandpaper and a honing jig. I got all of mine to 25, with a 30 degree micro bevel within an hour.Next, you'll want to spend some time flattening the back on float glass or your flattest stones. After that. I've sharpened them once in the two months I've had them and I'm still getting fine shavings. The handles aren't the greatest, and the metal rings don't stay put, but I could really care less. if they break, I order another set of $12 chisels. that easy.
