Review on Magicdo Pastels Holders Sharpeners Blending by Summer Hendricks

great luminosity but very difficult to blend without thinner

I am looking for a set of oil pastels that are smooth and creamy and mostly blendable but relatively firm. I'd love to use them in combination with other mediums, but I can't stand how soft "art quality" oil pastels are and how they literally melt into the paper (and in my hands, let's be honest). I like to use them for some detail and also to create organic shapes and the harder the pastel the more it allows me to give some definition to the lines and edges. So I started to dabble in oil pastels for kids and students. This kit is actually closer to what I was looking for, but one issue with this kit is that it cannot be mixed unless you use a thinner (like Gamsol). or alcohol), which I think is problematic for children. While they offer more control than most oil pastels and are less messy and therefore better for kids (I also love how big and chunky they are), they don't offer what oil pastels are loved for - the ability to mix and match any use chemicals. So if you're looking for super hard pastels and don't worry too much about blending, this is great. Opaque, bright and they go well with all types of paper. But blending requires more than just a steady flick of your finger. They really do look like wax crayons, opaque and oily.

Pros
  • Durable finish
Cons
  • Damaged
