I used 1/4" and 3/8" drill bits with a hand drill to finish some holes I had previously drilled with HSS bits. I used these Forstner bits to get a slightly better hole bottom. With this usage they did it. It is not carbide or HSS steel. These are carbon steel bits. UPDATE 8/30/2015 - I used 1/2" and 5/8" bits on over thirty 2" to 3" holes in a Ponderosa 2X6 pine board cabin door project. . heavy work. The beats worked well. better than i expected. . For the price they are great. Here are a few additional facts that may be of interest to others that are not mentioned in the product description on Revain.1. The bits are made in China.2. Bit 1" (speed values are printed on the bits themselves) is only suitable for a maximum speed of 450 rpm. Bit 7/8" for a maximum speed of 500 rpm. Bit 3/4" - max. 500 rpm 5/8" - max. 500 rpm 500 rpm 1/2" - max. 500 rpm 3/8" - max. 500 RPM 700 RPM 1/4" - 700 RPM max. These low RPM requirements may explain why many people have problems with their bits. For example, I won't use them with my "Total Shop" (e.g. Shop Smith) because Total Shop's minimum speed is 850 rpm, so I can only use it with a hand drill 3. The bits did not come in a secure WOODEN CASE, but in a secure PLASTIC case as per the Revain product information I am happy with the plastic case 4. I paid $11.45 for these bits.
