Check the date of manufacture of the device

Check the date of manufacture of the device before installation! It's on the back of a real smoke alarm: you have to open the box first. These devices only work for 8 years. More specifically, they will stop working either 10 years after the date of manufacture or 8 years after activation, whichever comes first. The device I received on November 2nd, 2020 had a manufacture date of February 2016. If I had activated it, it would have stopped working in February 2026, not the November/December 2028 which I paid for. I would lose 2.75 years of use: it would only last 5.25 years, not the full 8 years I paid for. Always check the date and return it if you cannot use your full 8 years. you paid for it These units are not cheap. Insist on what you paid for. Second note: Nest continues to show contempt for its pioneers: those of us with v1 devices that only last 6 years. Nest has done this with its thermostats. Now they've nailed it with their smoke detectors. These Nest Protects 2020 are not physically compatible with v1 devices. First, they use a completely different 120v plug and an adapter is not included or not available. This means many owners have to call an electrician or plumber to open the junction box, disconnect the old plug, and install the new plug. What is it like calling an electrician for $75-100 just to have them come? Ka-ching. But wait, there's more! Second, these new Nest Protects use a completely different mounting plate. You need to replace the mounting plate v1 with a new one (included). This new insert is more difficult to use compared to the v1 insert. Installing the device on the v1 disk was quite easy. These 2020 plates are harder to use. Oh, but that's not all! Third, 2020 plates have four fewer mounting/screw holes. If you were dependent on some v1 mounting holes, you may be out of luck with a new plate. A new disk to use because of course Nest didn't pay attention to us early adopters.
