I recently decided to remove the manual timer from my electric water heater and replace it with a smart switch (Sonoff TH16) which then controls a relay (120VAC per coil), which starts the water heater. While making these changes I decided it would be interesting to see how much power etc the water heater draws while running. I also connected the TH16 input to them so they are always on. You can go back and change it, but that's also how I get historical results. I use 2 of these counters - 1 for each input as they come from different inputs on the panel (red and black). The wires on the donuts are only a few inches long so I used a piece of 4 wire alarm cable to reconnect both donuts to the gauges where I disconnected them again. I wish the counters could be flipped so the wires come out on the right instead of the left, but that's not the case. I use a few pieces of double foam to attach the gauges to the beam next to the TH16. I also bought 2 more of these and will be hooking them up to the circuit breaker soon. I love that they are divided into donuts so I don't have to unplug the cords to put them on. I was concerned about two donuts touching next to the relay output, but they both control independently and don't seem to interfere with each other. An interesting project, why not? Also, once I plug the gauges into the circuit breaker box, I can determine if Duke Energy is right that my water heater is the largest consumer of energy in the house.
