Didn't live up to expectations

I bought a new dlink router (dual band with AC support) so I bought a few of these guys to upgrade my system and get the speeds promised by FIOS . So far, the router makes a decent impression. It does what is advertised. But not these gadgets. First I had to move the router within 15 feet of my computer before it picked up a signal and even allowed me to connect to the router. I have an app on my smartphone to measure signal strength from their sources and I could pick up both 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz signals from the same router 50-70 feet away. I then used my laptop to test the speed at 2.4GHz. with my old router and built-in WiFi (less than 5 Mbps), then a new router with built-in WiFi (50+ Mbps), then a new router with this new USB adapter (2 Mbps). What a shock that this USB adapter was only 1/25th the speed of my old built-in adapter. For 5.4GHz (and AC) I had nothing else to compare. It was good and at the maximum level my FIOS line can support. So I was happy with that. However, when testing with games, I had many episodes of lag and disconnects. I ended up reinstalling it and making sure I had the latest drivers installed. The lags and disconnects during games have stopped. I am still not satisfied with this product. 2.4GHz performance is terrible. 5.4 GHz is good, but drops like a stone as soon as you move a little further from the router. I love the specs and small size, but it just doesn't live up to what's important. Perfomance.

Pros
  • There's something to it
Cons
  • Minor issues
