This backpack is awesome. It goes with SO MANY THINGS. I carry it with a few textbooks, notebooks, clothes, food and drinks (every time I use it) for about 6 months. The strap pads do provide some support and if you keep them taut they also take some weight off your shoulders. It holds the rain very well - it gets wet on the outside but dry on the inside. There's a pocket on the front, two side pockets (ideal for a water bottle and umbrella), an inner zip pocket, an open pocket underneath and then there's a laptop sleeve as well as a couple of thinner pockets down the front of the sleeve - all of these pieces help to keep the bag organized. I've never used this little thing to put a wire through, but I think it will come in handy.
