This item holds the knife at the right angle for sharpening. It appears to be cast aluminum and is built fairly well. For more flexible knives there is another longer attachment. You can make mistakes if you don't hold the knife point perpendicular to the surface of the stone when you slide the knife over the stone. It helps keep your thumb on the knurled grip. Do this in good light and you will see the water flow evenly over the blade of the knife. I think that's an indicator that you're doing everything right. There are several short videos on YouTube about how to sharpen knives with Tormek. I looked at them several times before starting and found them very helpful.
