Review on πŸ“Ί Roku Ultra 2017: 4K/HDR/HD Streaming Player with Enhanced Remote & Advanced Features by Ted Slaughter

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I seriously wanted this Roku to like it.

I really wanted this product to be liked compared to the Apple TV for two main reasons: (1) I wanted to use a device with an easy-to-use remote control for my elderly mother-in-law; The Apple remote doesn't fit here, and (2) I wanted an inexpensive, easy-to-use option for watching TV with a seasonal rental I own (there are too many cables around). Unfortunately I'm sending it back after 4 days of use. And therefore. Remember I have (and still use) a 4th generation Apple TV: 1. We subscribe to the DirecTV Now app/service. Works fine on Apple TV. However, there is an audio syncing issue on some channels in the Roku version. I came across the Roku customer support forum. This is a known issue that has not been resolved at the time of publication. And it appears to be affecting other apps besides DirecTV Now. I even made sure I updated to the latest firmware. I can't explain why this works on Apple TV and not Roku.2. Wireless is so-so. I have an Asus RT-AC66U as a wireless router to provide 50Mbps/50Mbps FiOS service. Apple TV has never had a problem streaming content. Roku would lose connection about once or twice an hour. Just me and my wife. We have no other bandwidth congestion activities while watching TV. So it can't be an obstacle for the device. That's why I chose the Asus RP-AC56 wireless repeater. The Apple TV and Roku location is upstairs and uses 2.4GHz WiFi. So I figured maybe going down to just 5GHz and turning off 2.4 might help. But I needed a repeater to spread the 5GHz signal, which gave Roku the benefit of the doubt. No performance change. The connection was still intermittently dropping while streaming. Unfortunately, I'm returning Roku due to the performance parameters above, which I consider critical. However, I have decided to keep the repeater. Love being on faster 5GHz channels around the house! I sincerely wanted to love this device as it would solve the two urgent problems listed above.
