I bought this because the other gates were either too wide or just didn't fit our staircase. With these gates, they are small enough to fit perfectly from railing to wall. I had no problems with the size or with a board to fill in gaps. The gate itself arrived fully assembled, I just had to install it in the doorway or in my case the passageway to our staircase. At the bottom of the stairs we could use wide gates because they are wider. Our goal of buying them and hoping they fit was at the top of the stairs. Not only do these gates fit, but even when my toddler tries to push them, the gate doesn't open easily or even move. Donning both sides was easy, but I found wearing work gloves made gripping the dial that much easier. My hands started to sweat a little and slipped off a little. Protections are installed on the elements adjacent to the wall and railing so as not to damage anything. To use, simply slide the top button back and up. From there you can push or pull it to open it. It's possible to leave it open, but when my hands are full I squeeze it a little and it closes again. Very safe and secure for our little one to avoid getting hurt.
