This device does the job. This works best when the head is off the bench. I used it with an 18" 3/8" breaker. Some valve springs require 3/8 bar to be used on one side of the broach, others on the other side. It's hard to keep the spring compressed and then the retainers work. I recommend a small magnetic sensor to make removing the guard easier. (A magnetized screwdriver will also work). Works "as is" on Ford Expedition/F150 5.4L 2V. The center pin can be knocked out with a punch and replaced with a stud to allow the two pieces to fit in narrower vehicles. In a car it's too difficult to hold the compression alone, you need an assistant to work with the rocker arms or retainers while a third hand holds the tension.
