Used to make wax patterns for 3D printed parts for casting

I used this material to make a silicone mold for a musket part that I wanted to cast in steel. I had to do a wax master for that. I used Solid Edge CAD software to design the template and then used it to enlarge the part by 3% to account for steel shrinkage. After filling and sanding the master surface I was able to fill it with a silicone mold. I used vegetable oil as a mold lubricant. The silicone worked really well because I couldn't easily make a two part mold for this part and this part has undercuts that would make it difficult to to remove it from a rigid form. But due to the flexibility of silicone, once the wax hardens I can stretch the hole just enough for the part to be pulled out and then it springs back to its original shape for further casting. Since the 2 parts are equal in mixing volume, it is very easy to mix this "by eye" without measuring. . I had enough silicone for 3 molds as you can see in the photo. There are few issues with bubbles, and the material matches the master perfectly, picking up all the details. It sets fast enough that you can use the mold the same day you cast it. I used a vibrating hand sander to vibrate the body of the mold while the silicone was still liquid to shake out the bubbles.

Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
