Review on πŸŽ›οΈ Nobsound HiFi 6J2 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier Stereo PreAmp with Digital Treble and Bass Tone Control in Black by Jenny Howard

Revainrating 3 out of 5

It sounded great while it worked. But I failed two of them in a row. I'll try it again.

The all-tube Little Dot MK II headphone amp serves its purpose perfectly. This tube-buffered preamp gives you bass and treble control over your headphone amp. This tube preamp needs new tubes immediately. Don't use the standard Chinese bulbs. I have selected two matching Mullard tubes which will give you 0.500mW of gain when used with any headphone amp. Hey, for 45€ you get a very nice and well built tube preamp. . It cannot be used as a phono preamp, it is just a buffered tube preamp. I'll only give it 3 stars and I'll explain why. First, the quality control is terrible! I've ordered two of these and both have failed and have to be sent back for a third which hopefully sounds like it should. I have a good friend who has the exact same preamp and has none of the issues that both of my units had. My first Nobsound came on and produced noise when I turned on my Little Dot MK II or Mangi solid state headphone amp. This interference is very audible at any volume, around 50%, on my two headphone amps. Secondly, anywhere above the 2 o'clock position on Nobsound, this preamp generates a lot of THD. The THD values must therefore be very high. Thirdly, there is no information about the characteristics of this nobsound. no THD rating and no STNL numbers. Usually this isn't such a big deal, but with this preamp, some people (like me) need to know both of those characteristics, so I won't push the preamp too high. Its STNR is around 90DB, which isn't great, but good enough for my Little Dot MK II with a rating of just 89DB. As a result, I no longer get hiss with my Little Dot MK II unless I raise the preamp above the 2:00 position. When the preamp is cranked up to full volume, I hear the extra hiss it makes. The only reason I use it at all is to have tone controls for both of my headphone amps. It's nice to be able to boost the bass a bit and sometimes roll off the highs on older CDs that are too bright. So all in all you get a decent buffered tube preamp at a very good price. But you also need to add money to the total cost as you need to buy a matched pair of bulbs like the GE bulbs sold here. So I can't give a full review of this preamp due to having to return my first two. I have already sent one back which lost the channel after about 10 minutes of use. The second one I will still use until I get a new replacement after they sent me a new one. If I get a third faulty preamp, I'll stop buying them and opt for a better solid state preamp I was selling on another site. like my friends. It's very frustrating to return two of these and just hope the third one works. The one I'm using right now has static no matter what cables are connected to it. This has nothing to do with my two headphone amps, it's definitely Nobsound causing this static pop at any volume around 2pm. If they fail again I'll be forced to use a solid state preamp I've found elsewhere which is about twice the price of this one but much better made. Great buffered tube preamp when you get a working unit, but the quality control on it is made in China. The electronics are just terrible. I would use another method to keep the internal board from moving, but then again it's only $45 so don't be too picky. Good sound and very low THD from this small tube preamp. So overall it's great for some uses and should be good for someone who wants to customize the audio with a headphone amp. A very well designed buffered tube preamp, but don't forget to swap out the tubes for something suitable for better sound.
