I've had the unit less than a week so I don't have much experience with weather protection. But I am very satisfied with the range of the devices. I have a 1200 foot driveway that runs through woods with some elevation changes. The closest unit is about 400 feet from the house and is just below line of sight of the house with some small trees and bush in between. The farthest sensor is about 1,000 feet from the house and slightly higher than the next, having to travel about 600 feet through moderately dense forest. Both work fine when the receiver is plugged into a low power outlet. Both positions were chosen so that at least some direct sunlight hits the solar panel. The instructions are fairly basic, just a few grammatical errors, and there are videos on You Tube if needed.
