Well known, tried and tested filter media

This product is well known for providing beneficial insects with an excellent environment to grow and thrive. It's not too expensive so I bought some and put it in a bowl in my canister filter. Along with a bowl containing a combination of a bioball and a ceramic ring, it makes up the majority of my biological filtration, and a large coarse sponge pre-filter helps too. That should be more than enough to handle my 75 gallon tank. I also have a couple of mechanical filter sponges but I like to rinse them with tap water so the bacteria grow where I want them and not on the sponge which is eventually replaced. Half of them are very dense, like a rock. Not everything is porous. That's not a problem because I want the bacteria to grow in different ways and hopefully I'll attract different species. 2. It really needs a bag to hold it. This works in a canister, but the smaller pieces get misplaced and get stuck under the tray handles, making it difficult to stack the whole thing properly. I put it in two media bags and it just makes it easier to clean, but you have to buy a bag. All in all, it's worth having in your tray based on the reputation alone. There are enough porous rocks to justify the cost and I now have a good range of materials in my 24/7 filter.

Pros
  • Expensive but decent
Cons
  • Volume
