My first espresso resulted in an empty cup and a bad pump. I used Trader Joe's pre-ground espresso, which was standard finely ground espresso. When it was packed in a filter cup, it just couldn't push water through. Then I tried a standard coffee with a medium grind, and the espresso flowed like a waterfall. To my great surprise, it had an incredibly thick, rich crema and the espresso tasted great! The secret is to use a coarser grind than you think and it will turn out great. I have previously had a Mr Coffee pump espresso machine which has lasted a number of years, then I have swapped out 2 DeLonghi pump espresso machines in the last 5 years. This time I chose Krups. So far the flow rate and foam production is significantly better than other machines I've had. I hope this lasts long.
