I was trying to connect my 2018 15" MacBook Pro to my 2008 30" Apple Cinema HD Display. I had a similar setup with a Cinema HD display and my 2011 MacBook Pro, but since Apple feels the need to replace all ports every two years, I had to find a cheap and easy solution. First I bought a similar adapter from another manufacturer, but the signal did not go through the adapter. I was afraid I would have to buy a new monitor. But I decided to try again. Based on other people's experiences, I decided to give it a try. I plugged it in and it worked right away. Note that the 30-inch Cinema HD display still requires an Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter.
