Before I got my OBD2 scanner I thought that this type of device is mainly for reading and identifying trouble codes in my car. He does it very well and serves that purpose. That is, to give me information to help me decide if I need to take my car to a mechanic. In my area, a mechanic typically charges about $75 an hour. Therefore, unnecessary visits to the mechanic can be very costly. The price of this scanner is a lot less than a trip to the mechanic. A problem as simple as a loose gas cap can set off a warning and, if found, save me an unnecessary trip to the workshop. If the trouble code indicates something that needs attention, I can go to the mechanic and know in advance the problem that needs attention. My own scanner has the advantage that it collects a lot of data about my car and its properties. It reports most technical data about the vehicle itself and performance in terms of emissions, fuel consumption and engine power in real time. Data reporting depends on the software you download to your mobile device to monitor the scanner. There are many free and/or paid applications that can be downloaded for use with an OBD2 scanner. I suggest you try some free apps first and if you find one you like you can buy the pro version with extra features. Try more than one. I've found that paying attention to an app's rating and download count will lead you to the most popular and best performing apps. Setup is pretty easy, especially if you download the manual that comes with the software, which is crucial to understanding how to use the scanner. The cost of this scanner is worth what I saved in labor. I would recommend one of these scanners to friends and family.
