Review on OTC 7311A Pitman Arm Puller by Jake Meyer

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Transverse (clamping) screws too weak

ATTENTION - Transverse screws are too weak for large jobs! I used this to remove the tie rod from my F250 and the wing nut cross bolts are only grade 2 (if any). They probably match small arms, but the Super Duty arms are the largest this puller can handle. The wing nuts were right on the ends of the bolts' threads, and the force stretched and bent the bolts so the jaws began to slip out. Luckily I was watching closely or he might pop out and rearrange my dental work (or worse). I reinstalled the puller two more times but same result. My pitman arm wasn't rusted or seized in any way (West Coast truck). The Ford special tool number went straight to this OTC number, so it was the right one for the application. It's just that the size of the bipod is at the limit of where this puller will fit. I replaced the cross bolts with slightly longer Class 8 bolts and nuts ($3 Fix) and it ripped the arm off like a grape skin. Not a big deal but I expected more from OTC.
