I am returning to MTB and received these to replace an outdated Shimano XT PD-M747 pedal set. I was worried they wouldn't be as good as my old ones but I have to say I don't see any difference. The 50g weight difference is imperceptible, they spin very smoothly even after 100 seconds, switching on and off is very smooth, and they look almost the same as the 747s. I guess his technology seeps into action. I've used Shimano's full range of SPD products and they're as good as any and great for a beginner/returning to a sport pedal. A SH51 release type is included which means you have to turn on to turn off and I've had a couple of nasty crashes with them in the past as I got used to SPD. I prefer the reusable SH56 cleats which are better for beginners, off-road and commuting and allow you to easily take your foot off the pedal in an emergency and still hold the pedal well enough for rabbit jumps and sprints.
