It shouldn't be that difficult to align equipment in a rack, but somehow it is. This is especially problematic when you have multiple 1U units that need to match. (Server racks are categorized by U dimensions. U is the standard unit of measurement used to denote the vertical space occupied in a rack. 1U equals 1.74 inches.) It's odd that many racks (perhaps all racks ) are not labeled. Marking the rack rails would make aligning the blocks a lot easier. That's exactly what StarTech.com rack markers do. Simply cut them with scissors to fit your rack (up to 49 racks long), peel off the backing tape and attach the labels. It doesn't get any harder than that. It took me less than five minutes to attach StarTech.com rack unit labels to both sides of my home office network equipment rack. The adhesive on the back of the labels is forgiving, and it gave me time to move each label so it ran straight along the edge of my shelf. Now it's very easy to add new blocks to the rack and align them. My only concern was that while the labels matched the rack units themselves well, they didn't match the screws or vertical rails. I didn't have enough tape to reach the top and the bottom was too long. I don't know if this has to do with how the tape is made or if there was a misunderstanding on my part on how to align the labels. In any case, while the labels are quite useful, they look a bit unprofessional on a shelf. However, I'm much better off with StarTech.com's Rack Unit Labels than without them. And if for some reason they bother me, they are removable.
