I don't really know if it was necessary (never used it on previous battery changes) but I hooked it up to a portable, replaced the battery and that was it Well . no drama Seat/mirror profiles saved. radio ok. Custom jpeg on dashboard. It doesn't look like the computer needed to relearn anything.
