Review on Zojirushi NHS-06 3-Cup Rice Cooker (Uncooked) by Duke Ballard

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A simple and effective product for the kitchen and dining room

Looking through Revain I realized I've had this rice cooker for 15 years! So I thought it was worth a review. I use it once or twice a week on average and have only used it to cook brown and white rice. foamier bubbles, in addition to brown rice, which requires more water). As long as the lid is on properly (not floating in water or a random grain of rice) and you cover it with a towel (a flour-bag towel works great), you're good to go. But I'm not a switch cleaner. I check that the lid is on properly and cover it with a tea towel or tea towel. I almost never soak rice, not even brown rice. If you want a no-spill rice cooker, you'll want one of the snap-on lid rice cookers, they have special seals and systems to control bubbles and spills. This simpler style has the advantage of being less bulky and easy to clean with warm water and a dish brush. rice cooker. For Japanese short or medium grain white or haiga rice (partially milled) (e.g. Nishiki, Botan Calrose) I would use 1 cup washed rice: 1.25 cups water. (It's the 6-ounce mug that comes with the stovetop.) I also use Japanese medium-grain kagayaki brown rice, which pairs great with just 1 cup of washed rice: 2:25 cups of water, and great without pre-soaking cooks. . Unfortunately, I find that brown rice is more variable in its water requirements; So YMMV. I don't like plugging and unplugging things all the time so I use a simple plug in switch on the wall to turn it off. Found one at my local hardware store many years ago, it is similar to this GE Earthing Switch, Plug-In, White, Energy Efficient, Compact Design, UL Listed, 15A, 120VAC, 1800W, 25511. The main downside for the 1.2 L model (medium size, I think it can hold 5-6 wet cups max) is that the bottom feels too hot. Cooking only 1 cup of (raw) rice usually results in the rice being dry and crispy at the bottom. My typical batch is 2 cups of uncooked rice at a time, and I find batches of 2-3 cups work well. The underside may brown slightly, but turning it off for about 30 minutes doesn't dry it out too much. However, it's definitely annoying and it's the only issue that's ever made me want to explore another rice cooker. But since it has proven to be a workhorse and reliably produces delicious rice for my purposes, I still give it 5 stars.
