I see very conflicting reviews here and was a bit surprised. I bought one of these in July 2009, it's now May 2014. I'm very happy. I knew what it was when I bought it and it worked as expected. Now let me tell you how I use it. I bought this diamond stone for my boy scout kit. I have the finest diamond stones and I have some fine alumina stones. I even have a Japanese water stone, but those are things that 12-year-old boys can't use, especially at camp. I bought it to share. So he went to camp in 2010-2012, plus weekends and whenever I needed a quick study. Then, in 2013, my son became a scout camp staffer. I put it in his kit. There were a lot of Boy Scouts in the area he worked in if they needed to sharpen something so he just put it in his shorts pocket and carried it with him for a full day for 6-10 weeks. It turned out that this really was the best use for this particular stone. Light weight so it's easy to carry, diamond stone so you don't get oil in your pocket. Durable and resistant to use by rank lovers. And contrary to reports, the plates never came off. I just threw this rock in a chest to come back for another 11 weeks this year. I've bought similar stones cheaper, but they often came with dents. So I call it good value for money. This is probably the best option for your pocket or backpack and also for learning to sharpen. Definitely Scoutmaster approved.
