Review on Enhanced Print Quality: Creality 3D CR 10S Filament Detector for Seamless Printing Experience by Christopher Sullivan

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Easy to set up, amazing print quality with just a few adjustments. Has thermal runaway.

Media could not be loaded. Although I'm fairly familiar with 3D printers, this is my first. Creality makes some of the most popular budget 3D printers - there are even two subscription plans on Reddit (Creality and CR10), and the CR-10S and Ender 3 are listed as recommended models for hobbyists. As a result. There is a huge user community, lots of updates, and tons of YouTube videos to answer any questions. The CR-10S was packaged *very* well - although the box was rough, everything inside was perfect. It took about 30 minutes to set everything up. Then I discovered a problem - the printhead carriage on the X-Rail was very wobbly. I later found an eccentric in a YouTube video, but concluded that the plate was actually slightly bent - I suspect this happened when they pushed the nuts into the back. Luckily it only took about 10 minutes to remove and align the part, after which it fit perfectly. I also tightened the 2 eccentric nuts on the Y axis. The X and Y belts were tight enough that no further adjustments were needed. When zeroing the disk I found that there is an interaction between the controls. That means you have to go through them a few times to get the slab really flat. The total time was now maybe an hour or so. I spent about another 15 minutes disconnecting and reconnecting the wires so they were neatly tied together and after that I was ready to print. The CR-10S comes with a small PLA roll and the included micro USB contains a G-code file for the "Maneki Neko" cat. You can get everything as an STL file, but you have to convert it to G-code with a slicer, and I was itchy. It is printed perfectly (see photos). Very impressed with the print quality. The CR-10S includes multiple colored plastic fairings to decorate the rails. As it turns out you can't mount this to the left Z-rail and X-rail as there are screws in the way. It's ok but they had to lower the plastic edge a few mm so it wasn't a problem. Overall very impressed. Note that this printer uses a Bowden tube, so printing elastomeric material is challenging.

Pros
  • Handsfree
Cons
  • Very Expensive
