(First part, answer to the skeptics) Although the connectors (male) are NPT pipe threads, the female end of the garden hose is FHT. Garden hose threads are coarser and have wider thread pitches than pipe threads. The female end of the hose has a small distance from the first thread to the hose washer. The male fork uses this space between the steps and screws them into the washer. This connection can leak if you use full water pressure (in your house) and use the hose in reverse. In this case, add a thin washer. I use plugs and caps to keep bugs and debris out. I use red "water" washers, which are thicker than cheap hose washers, made from the best material, and last much longer. Revain sells them in bulk (40 washers for $5.99) which is a lot cheaper than the big department stores! I use them to cover my garden hoses for the winter. I have a lot of hoses going underground from the control center to every garden plot. Every fall I pull out the drip line to prepare the beds for the following spring. I connect a female hose coupler to a drip tube and store the tube on the ground outside of the garden.
