This is a great way to sharpen knives yourself! We used to send ours to the hardware store so of course we waited until they were really stupid to do something and in the meantime struggled with a knife that didn't work very well. and we tried various handy dandy tools but they didn't work really well. Our son told us about using a sharpening stone and I bought this one because it really had everything we needed. Most importantly, it has a wide grit range so you can go from a really old knife that takes a lot of work, to fine polishing a fairly sharp knife (or just keeping your knives sharp all the time). Plus all the useful tools to make them easier to use, like a wooden base, rubber pieces to hold them in place and an angled guide. Don't be afraid to use a whetstone - there are tons of videos on YouTube to get you started, and once you get the hang of what you're doing it's really easy and quick - especially if you're just a quick one couple make movements to keep the knives constantly sharp. I would recommend this product - it's great and considering all the features it's a good price.
