I have not tested these alarms but the instructions state that pressing the test button not only checks the alarm is working but also the battery is good, but it also verifies that the smoke/fire and carbon monoxide alarms are actually working! This is important as the old style alarm only confirmed that the alarm itself was making a SOUND and that the battery was fine, it was NOT informing you that the detection function was working properly. NO LONGER NEED TO LIGHT A CANDLE OR MATCH TO KNOW IF YOUR ALARM CLOCK IS ACTUALLY WORKING OR NOT. Now it is very important for your peace of mind to know that the alarm is actually working as it should. One more fact. This alarm detects fire/smoke using PHOTOELECTRIC detectors. They are much faster and more reliable than older types of ionization. When buying a new alarm, be sure to buy one that uses photovoltaic technology, not ionization technology. They cost about the same.
