Got it. not intentionally. I want to capture gameplay from a laptop that can't handle both gaming and recording, but the settings I have make me deaf to game audio. this is not exactly the intended use. I'll admit I haven't tested the full setup yet, but I suspect I'll probably need the included cable to power the adapter. EDIT: I don't! HDMI to audio conversion gets enough power from HDMI cable. Honestly I would like to add an extra star to my rating. Please note that you may need to adjust the screen resolution when connecting this device for the first time. A trifle, annoying, but not worth a point
