We have two dogs - a 14 year old, 40lb Shepherd/Lab mix (Sky) and a 6 year old, 55lb Golden/Springer mix (Duette). About a year ago, Sky began hesitating as he jumped into the back of our SUV and hesitated as he jumped out. Her eyesight became impaired and old age caught up with her strength. So we started getting him in and out of the back of the SUV, but sometimes it wasn't easy, and doing it with a wet dog out in the lake isn't exactly fun. So we started thinking about the ramp. We made sure it was long enough to create a gentle incline into the vehicle and not so long that we couldn't stow it in the back with dogs, light enough to maneuver and strong enough not to move and not to bend when dogs walk over it. We searched for solutions and looked at pet stores, but the length/thickness/weight combinations were not satisfactory. Then, based on some online reviews, we found the Solvit TriScope Ramp. We took Solvit's advice to gently introduce the ramp to the dogs in the house, let them run on the surface, offer treats, and slowly but steadily raise the ramp to a slope to make them feel safe at the surface. This training lasted about 6 hours at home. We left it in the house overnight so they could get used to it like using dog furniture. When using the vehicle for the first time, both dogs climbed up the ramp with ease. The youngest (Duette) loved to jump up and down, but now we frown on it so her older "sister" feels at home on the ramp. Now Sky will select a ladder without being prompted. According to our estimates, this changed their world a lot. The triple telescopic function is great. It packs compactly with the dogs in the back of an SUV; they don't seem to mind. It's light enough that my wife and I can easily extend the ramp and lift it for storage. It has a latch to prevent it from accidentally popping out if accidentally tipped. The latch is a little fiddly to pull out as it's fueled with the ramp closed, but it's a very, very minor inconvenience and certainly not worth deducting the stars. The fine-grained surface was criticized in some reviews. Ramp. Our two dogs don't complain and watching our 14 year old Skye go down the stairs makes me feel comfortable otherwise she might slip and get scared of the ramp. Overall this ramp meets our criteria perfectly, our 2 dogs love it and now prefer it to trying to jump in/out and it is compact and very strong/stable. We will recommend this to any of our friends.
