I think it should be thicker because there is enough play up and down between the kingpin and the locking jaws for the gripper plate to disengage the clutch plate if that ever happens for some reason . In this case, the coupling head can rotate slightly. Then when he sits back down, the catch plate could be on top of the clutch plate. Unlikely, but possible. I noticed this when raising the seat bike with the carriage attached.
