Review on Get Moving With ROKR 3D Wooden Construction Trucks - Movable Vehicle Toys For Kids And Collectors! by Nick Grays

Revainrating 4 out of 5

High detail and function

I have never done one of these types of builds before but I was a major Lego kid and my day job has me putting small things together all the time. I wasn't big on plastic model kits when I was younger because all the paint, decal, and burr removal was way over my attention span. I figured this would be cool to try out as a sort of middle ground. Overall it was fun but there was some hiccups. The box says 3hrs and 8yrs+ but there is no way either of those is happening. Unless your 8yr old is really into this kind of thing they probably wont have the patience for it. It is more like the oldschool plastic models than it is Lego. All the parts take cleanup and processing to fit right. It took me a few days at 2-4hr a day trying to pay attention to details and hitting some snags.First I was very impressed by the attention to detail on not only the pieces but also the packaging. It comes like flatpack but has spacers and protection so the smaller sheets don't get cracked in shipping. There is a part where you build a small tool to help with assembly of the tracks and I thought that was really a nice addition. Even parts that you really can't see in the final build have detail on them and all the articulated parts are actually quite clever. This is why I was surprised to find some near fatal flaws once deeper into the building of it. Pretty early I figured out that the pegs only just barely fit into the holes and that is actually good for keeping it together in the end though it makes some of the multi-peg assemblies near impossible. Sanding the sharp corners off and putting a very slight bevel on the pegs helped a ton and didn't impact the hold at the end. The little sand paper sheet does a good job of this and it is nice they include it. That wasn't a huge issue but it would've been a nice mention in the instruction. Wax can also help make the assembly smoother I found out later but can be rather tedious. I used it on some of the more fragile and difficult areas. I am sure there are tons of tips and tricks online for these type if kits so I won't go into detail. I did not go looking for those because I wanted to go in blind to give a fair review of just this individual product. The real issue I found was that some of the bendy pieces were just bad. Must be a void in the plywood right at a joint because nothing made this better or fixed it. The first time a piece broke I thought it was probably my fault and it did repair OK with some white glue. The second time a piece broke I was more annoyed because it didn't seem like I did anything wrong. The third piece right after confirmed this suspicion when it snapped off without me even bending it. Most of the pieces repaired OK with the white glue but the one really would not, I had to give up on it and you can see the hole in the last uploaded picture. I tried several methods to remedy these bends but nothing worked, it must be a flaw in the wood or the cut. This was also backed up when some of the small detail pieces chipped out the same way though it did not cause mechanical failure on those. They do give some backup pieces which is nice but only for one of the bendy pieces and none of the bigger yellow ones have backups.I really wanted to go 5 starts from the start but those breaking pieces are super incredibly frustrating and especially with one unfixable I had to knock the rating down. I would have gone down to 3 or less but the rest of the detail really holds the rating high. The tracks even actually work like tracks which is just awesome and some of the assembly is really rather clever.
