Review on SAMSUNG Portable SSD 500GB MU PC500H by Scott Gafur

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Seems like a fast ride! But.

Owned a Samsung T5 and a few other SSDs for a while. Was glad Samsung got a USB 3.2 SSD which should be much faster. , You must have USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 on your PC/Laptop! With no USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports, it works similarly to the T5. I tested my 2019 Surface 3 laptop with USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 support. I was able to get full speed from the best and copy files to it. Seems very fast! But! As the file size increased, the speed/performance started to decrease. It's not noticeable when the file size is less than 1GB, but once the file gets larger than 1GB, the larger it gets, the worse the performance. I also tested the T7 on my 2014 Macbook Pro with USB 3.0. The speed test shows that its speed is about the same as the T5. Result. When transferring small files, T7 is very fast! As the file size increases, especially for files larger than 1GB, you will start to notice some performance/speed degradation. Since I do a lot of video editing and the files can be very large, this can be a problem for me. I think I'll wait to upgrade to newer T7 drives. Until the speed improves and becomes more stable. Here is my test and my experience. Tested on my new 13" MS Surface 3 laptop with USB-C 3.2. Crystal Disk Mark 1GB benchmarks (see attached photo for test details) : 237.65 MB/sRND4k Write: 3 seconds 10GB: 22 seconds T5 file transfer 1GB: 4 seconds 10GB: 35 seconds

Pros
  • RUGGED AND ROBUST: Impact resistant and withstands a 6 foot drop.
Cons
  • No performance
