I already have a Magellan Maestro 4250 which I bought quite expensively in 2007 and which has never let me down. It had a touchscreen and voice recognition. With a subscription, you can even get real-time traffic updates. The last feature never worked very well, as did the voice recognition due to my French accent. accident or traffic jam. But then I was offered a Magellan 5430T-LM review, I jumped at the opportunity to free my iphone. Here's what I think of it: What I like: - It's very affordable at about 1/3 the price I paid for my previous device - The display does a great job of showing you the freeway junctions to get you in the right direction point . It shows you which lane to go in order to make a right turn. - The touch home button is very convenient to return to the map. - All fluff is gone, and only information about driving remains. - It displays the speed limit on all roads and beeps and indicates if you are exceeding the speed limit. What I didn't like: - The software is not downward compatible with older devices. As a result, I was unable to transfer information from my previous GPS device to this one. I had to re-enter all my addresses one by one. One star deduction for that. It looks like there is a bug in the system as the device reboots every time I try to access it with my favorite handwritten addresses. In general, I spent a lot of time entering addresses that I can no longer find on the device. This is another lost star. "Even with information updated in real-time, arrival estimates are still a long way from Waze. β The device is powered by the cigarette lighter, not the USB port. This means it gobbles up a lighter or forces you to buy an adapter. Your speed is only displayed momentarily when you press the button. I would prefer one that displays it all the time. In summary, I don't mind using it to have a better sense of where to turn or pick my lines on the freeway. I will use it in conjunction with my iPhone app though as it still doesn't accurately update routes with actual traffic and doesn't provide good enough estimates.
