I remember my dad making his own sausage using fresh ham and spices. He ground pork with a manual meat grinder bolted to the table. The meat grinder was used by my mother to make spreads by grinding and mixing ground beef, pickles, mayonnaise and some mustard. A home grinder is a great idea for a number of reasons, not the least of which is being able to prepare fresh ground beef for yourself and knowing what's in it and what "fresh ground beef" actually is. The presence of a meat grinder allows you to use various beef roasts sold in grocery stores and turn them into good ground beef for storage in the freezer. Whatever the store advertising claims, the ground beef they sell remains "mystery meat". Nowadays in supermarkets there are rarely real butchers who make their own minced meat. Instead, it often comes pre-packaged and "processed" from meatpacking plants to keep it looking fresh for longer. Who knows how many different types of cattle are represented in that pound of "fresh ground beef" sold at the local supermarket? and mine: hamburger. This is a great electric meat grinder. I don't have to attach it to the countertop like my dad did with his manual coffee grinder. It was easy to assemble. The instruction manual was easy to understand, unlike the "Chinese-English" ones that often accompany small appliances made in China. I could choose from 3 different sized plates depending on how coarse or thick I wanted the grind. The process went smoothly. I cut the meat into small pieces and sent them to the meat grinder. I had no issues throughout the process other than leaving some of the bindings and sealing the sanding plate the first time. That's what they meant when they said cut them out first! Cleanup, very important when working with raw meat, was easy. Parts soaked and washed in hot soapy water (a brush is handy for this), dried and put away for storage. Be sure to spray the parts with food grade silicone spray before and after use. I've only had ground beef so far, but am considering trying the turkey breast. I remember when my mom bought meat for meatloaf from A&P. It came in packets that contained 1/3 ground beef, 1/3 ground veal, and 1/3 ground pork. Maybe I'll try and find some veal. It, like lamb, is hard to find in my area. I found the Weston 575W meat grinder to be a good addition to my hobby kitchen. I am happy to give 5 stars.
