It wasn't very sharp when it arrived and after it was used to stamp felt pads it lost its low sharpness. The steel was very soft, as if it hadn't been hardened at all. So I sharpened the punch a bit with a grinding wheel and then tempered the steel in my forge. It now cuts through 1/8 inch thick rigid felt with a single hit of a 2 pound hammer without hitting it. A word of caution: if you decide to try the same thing and google how to harden steel, google tempering as well. You must harden this punch after heating and curing, otherwise it will become too brittle.
