I live in the outback and bought this device to better identify sounds from fields and forests. That does the job well. My only experience with IR is with my security cameras and they have MUCH more range than the cameras. I was surprised to see a clear range of around 150-200 yards. Deer can be seen in the edge areas, but the smaller creatures should be a little closer. I've been asked this by friends, so I'll just say that it's impossible to put it on a rifle, at least not without some ingenuity. Overall very happy with the purchase.
