After looking at various iPad holders I decided I needed something more permanent. Be sure to fold the leading edge down (it's hinged). I've used this with an iPad in both landscape and portrait modes. In the upright position, the iPad protrudes slightly over the top of the stand (as to be expected from the measurements). It seems to be a solid stand. You can tilt the stand to get the angle you want. It is designed to be placed on a flat surface, not on your lap. This stand works exactly how I wanted it to.
