Helpful tip for filters

My new 2004 BMW X5 3.0 with 200,000 miles had very dirty transmission oil. My habit is to change all the fluids when you buy a car without service records. I first tried looking at the sample to see if there were any metallic flakes and I found no flakes, more like a black liquid. This filter fits 3.0 engines and GM transmissions, mine was made on 7/04 with a 17 hex fill plug and a T-40 drain plug. The one I removed turned out to be a Wix filter as it had a white plastic ring and an orange gasket on the neck. There was another filling that was removed with a special tool. It was identical to the one that was removed from the old filter so I'm guessing it was left over from the last service. So 2 O-rings are no problem. This filter has one and that's all I used. When installed, it rested against the filter neck and was very reliable. I kept the white o-ring and the two orange gaskets just in case. I have, as DIY Nathan recommends, filled out a Castrol (or Valvoline) multi-car import that has an approved Dextron 3 specification. I don't know why but my yellow 4x4 warning came on and didn't go off on normal test driving. I had to hook up my Autel Al609P scanner, go into the ABS scanner and clear 3 codes related to the wheel sensors. I went off the ground and the wheels might spin, who knows. After clearing the code, the light went out after about 30 feet of driving. The transmission feels great and shifts very smoothly. I'll probably do that every 30k and try to overhaul the transmission in the future. Hope that helps.
