After checking the cables slide easily into the slot (one had to widen the hole a bit with a flathead screwdriver), then I heated the new ends with a flashlight, fitted them and quickly quenched them in some water, done making sure the cable held up still moved. This process ensures that the ends are securely attached to the cable so they don't move. When reinstalling in the door I had to adjust the end of the cable clip a bit to get the handles to open the door but I am very happy with this repair. It seems very safe, so I know it's one thing in my truck I won't have to think about again. Here are a few notes. Things will get hot using this method, so don't burn yourself. The tongs are also hot, so cool them too. Do not slide your hands over the cable so that they touch hot parts. In general, be careful.
