Very weak signal, doesn't always work

I read the other reviews and thought maybe I was lucky. First of all, this thing has no instructions. I had to google it and found it to be the same as the Huawei mifi hotspot and used the same instructions there. The battery does NOT hold a charge, so you must leave it plugged in. The signal is pretty weak and doesn't seem to go further than 5-10 feet.
