I use this for a 15 inch laptop. That's all I wanted in a stand. Fully adjustable. I don't travel with her so can't comment, it's about as solid as it gets. I also have a plastic sleeve on my laptop and it fits perfectly. Not sure if it will work with 17" but 13" is fine. This stand doesn't bang on your arms and hands, which is a big plus. My posture at the table has already improved. While my MacBook Pro doesn't overheat, I'm sure it will act as a heatsink for it. long for it and I am very happy with my choice! Update: There are rubber stickers that hold the laptop in place. They are washable.
