Review on ๐ŸŒŸ KYB KG54341 Gas-a-Just Gas Shock Review: Premium Silver and White Shocks for Superior Performance by Danny Poulin

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Firmly controlled handling without harshness

I chose these shocks to replace my OEM shocks on a 2005 Suburban Z71 that had 132,000 miles on the original shocks at the time (Bilsteins on the Z71 I think) one of which failed completely (front driver) and the two rear ones were weak. I wanted the shock to be stiffer and more manageable than the stock spring on the regular Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon (not Z71, not homologated), but not as hard to ride as the Z71 OEM shocks that came from the factory (I know I don't drag and I don't carry heavy loads). After much research I found that KYB Gas-a-Just monotube shocks share the difference, they are most similar to the Z71 Bilstein but with a little more compliance. These shock absorbers do not disappoint. The ride is much more controlled and less smooth than the base Suburban suspension or my worn-out Z71 shocks, without being stiff or bobbing. The corners are so flat my mom said it flexes better than her 2011 Toyota Highlander. Build quality and finish appear to be excellent. Installing these rear shocks was pretty easy. Just remember to jack up the car when working underneath. Also remember to place the bottom end of the damper INSIDE the brake hose (between the axle and the brake hose) before you put it on top, otherwise you won't be able to twist the bottom end of the damper into position (the brake hose will im way) . For me these shocks were the best choice in the ride/handling/towing trade-off.

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are even more interesting options.
