They are carved. I've never been so frustrated with a simple DIY job. After searching the internet to figure out why I couldn't get the knockouts out, I worked harder again. I ended up breaking the rivet on the box door before giving up. Destroyed the hole saw and got enough then use a jigsaw blade to finish the cutting job. Added two hours of what should have taken 2 minutes just to remove the perforation. Don't buy this unless you have a very large drill or don't want to spend an extra two hours on it.
