Fairly average but serviceable - Vaule Engineering could become a bestseller

Bought to replace an aging reliable Fluke that gave up the ghost after years of use. Less than 5 years after my retirement I have decided not to buy an instrument that costs about 4 times as much as this one. However, it's true, you get what you pay for. As this is a new purchase I will update this review with any operational issues. It comes with a serviceable nylon case to which a magnetic or Velcro strap is attached. The case has a vinyl window that always tears or is too hard to see, two velcro straps for attaching the T-pair to pipes etc, a cheap battery, good rubber case and 2 T-pairs. I don't like a few things. Inserting tees requires more force than is reasonable. If the resolution is set to whole numbers with no decimal places, the reported temperature will have an annoying "0" in front of it. This should be a simple code fix in the firmware. Proper pre-planning would not incur any additional costs to correct these errors. It is absurd to only see one passing temperature without changing to another. The previous items are annoying and should never have been launched. The next point could be a deal killer for me. The ON button is a momentary button that's easy to press, and without an auto-shutoff feature, this thing will eat up the batteries like crazy. The power switch must be a slide switch and the min/max function must be programmed to override the automatic power off. Slightly more expensive but not prohibitively expensive to repair. The $5 added to the cost would be easily offset by the impact this would have on performance. Aside from the cost of the batteries, the cost of wasting time getting to the truck and replacing them is more than a nuisance. Yes, you definitely get what you pay for. Update 31 Mar 20 if that's all your budget allows then go for it. An on/off switch and one temperature at a time is not worth it for me. Other options are more expensive but much more attractive. Returned.

Pros
  • Excellent temperature compensation for rapidly changing conditions
Cons
  • No automatic controls
