Review on ๐ŸŽฎ Nintendo Switch PowerA Joy Con & Pro Controller Charging Dock by Matthew Owens

Broke straight out of the box

I have used PowerA products in the past including the Dualshock 4 charger which I use every day and love. However, the build quality of this particular product is unacceptable, especially for an officially sealed Nintendo product. I received the product and even before opening it I heard something heavy and plastic rattling inside the box, not a good sign but I pushed forward, I opened it and through the bottom you can see how the board and a big one pieces of metal are touched. inside and the plastic parts fall out. I took it to a safe place and checked that it works, it flashed two colors of the LED and then nothing, it didn't charge the joy-con or the pro controller. Rather than return it I decided to take it apart and see if it was something I could fix. Opening it up, I was greeted by a lopsided board that wasn't screwed down properly and appeared to be missing a screw, the ribbon cables for the Joy-Con charger were unplugged, and of course the metal weight broke any stands designed to hold it in place as well. I unscrewed the circuit board, unplugged it and inspected it; There was no obvious damage or missing components, however it should be noted that the actual headers were soldered crookedly. After checking I reconnected and plugged in all the connectors to see if it works and it flashes two colors of the LED on top and then nothing, no pro controller or joy minus is charging. After some fiddling I gave up, not sure if the weight caused invisible damage or if it just didn't work at first, what's clear is that it was a waste of money and given how brittle the plastic was, there's a good one Chance that even if I order another one, it will suffer the same fate upon delivery.

Pros
  • New to my collection
Cons
  • Out of date
